This is a very annoying story so bear with me. I put in a reservation to rent a road bike through BYU(outdoors unlimited) a couple of weeks before the race. Everything was looking great. I got an email from BYU on Friday, the day before the race, that they were unable to fulfill my reservation due to selling all the the rental bikes for the season. Okay?. So I called a couple of bike shops and only one (Maddog Cycles in Orem) said they might have a bike my size. So I hurried over there at noon on Friday, they only had a hybrid not a road bike. I took it, the hybrid was way lighter than my dirt bike. I was not happy with my bike at all but had to be.Race day was so cold. The race got started 20 minutes late. Still Cold. I could not get warmed up for the 5K run at all. The last 1/2 mile had a huge hill no one was expecting, they had to change the route a little due to road construction, it was so huge. That hill however did warm me up pretty good. I ran the 5k in 30 minutes flat. Pretty good considering that huge hill. Next I get the first lap of the 10 mile bike almost done and here is another huge hill that trumps the run hill. People were getting off their bikes and jogging up this hill because it was faster than riding up. I was dying after the hill but still feeling pretty good. I was about 3/4 of a mile out from finishing the last lap when I get a flat tire. I mean, come on. I jog myself and the bike back to the transition area. Biking took me about 50 minutes. So Tired. I have to strip down to my bathing suit, so very cold, and run into the pool area about 50 yards. Luckily the indoor pool was heated and felt really nice when I got in. After fighting people for position I finished the swim( in 9 minutes) and thus ended my 1st backwards triathlon in 1 hour and about 28 minutes. I not sure what the exact time was and I don't care due to the flat tire incident.
It was a great experience and despite all the the obstacles I had so much fun. I think triathlons have won over my heart. Way more fun that running half marathons. So I will never do this triathlon again, due to the hills, I hope to do many more next spring and summer season. Who's with me?

oh yeah! I was thinking about you because I saw others who had done that triathlon. Too bad about all the lame happenings. Oh well I guess there's a really really good chance that the next one will be much more smooth.
Oh how I wish I could've been next to you through that! I can't wait to do my first tri - and I will for sure next year since THIS IS MY LAST PREGNANCY!!! I totally agree on the fun bit - even though I haven't done a race - the training is just WAAAY better. So next July - I'm doing it! Well, maybe August - July only gives me a month a half to train. Geez, I can't wait!
Kudos to you! I think that's totally admirable. Super cute new family pic by the way. You have adorable kids.

congrats on the tri. I agree, they are way more fun than a half marathon, and after my first tri, I vowed to never do another marathon. What were the distances on each? I may want to do that one next year, even with the hills.
What a trooper! What dedication! I was so impressed to read of your perseverance...
GOOD JOB!!!
I think it's great you didn't give in from the get go, in finding a bike to ride!!!
