Referendum 1 (school vouchers)

I have to tell you how disappointed I am with Utahs education system. Our big topic up for vote yesterday was the school vouchers, which I am totally for. I went to the school and voted believing I would make a difference with the outcome. It is so annoying how people vote without knowing the facts. They just do what everyone else is doing without looking into the real facts. I wanted the choice of where my kids state money would go for their education. Having looked into Utah schools and more importantly the ones my kids will be going to if we are here in 2 more years, my kids will not be going to public schools. I wanted the vouchers to pass so I would be able to have some help from the state to send my kids to "good" schools. The average high school senior in utah is equivalent to a high school sophmore in Texas. My sister came up to Utah for her senior year and in Texas she need a full schedule to graduate. When registering for classes here and Spanish Fork High School, which is considered a great high school, she only needed 1/2 of a semester of an english class to graduate. In other words, she needed 6 weeks of an english class and she graduated from high school. I mean good for her she got to finish earlier than expected, btu what does that show us about the school systems here. I am worried everyday that my kids will be behind in school if we ever move out of Utah. Vouchers was the answer for me. I think it should of been my decision! For a mormon culture that Utah is and the importance the church puts on getting an education I cannot believe how no one will do anything to help Utahs educational system. Sorry for the rant I need to get it out.

BOOOOOOOO! I really disagree. I'll be the first to say that there needs to be reform in public education but vouchers was NOT the way to go.
Also, the people I talked to didn't really seem to be blindly voting either. Most seemed to be genuinely concerned about doing what they felt was right, for or against. So just because they don't agree doesn't mean they didn't think it out first.
... don't get me going!

I know. For me it is best not to think about it anymore.

Brooke's sister. Had to comment. Just think about what COULD happen if education was turned totally for-profit. Think of the contracts, the textbook companies, all the money-maker's greed out there just waiting to get their piece of the pie. I don't think it's the answer either. Charter schools. Think about Charter Schools...
